LED screen for events: what size to choose

An LED screen can be the backdrop of a stage, the place where a company's logo is shown or where the photos of a wedding are played. Before you ask for one, it helps to be clear on a few points.

What is pixel pitch (P3.9, P2.9…)?

The number is the distance, in millimetres, between the points of light on the screen. The smaller it is, the sharper the image up close. A P3.9 screen has its points 3.9 mm apart: it looks sharp from about 4 metres, the usual distance between an audience and a stage.

What size do I need?

It depends on how many people there will be and how far away they'll be watching. As a guide:

  • For a hall or a company dinner, a screen that reads well from the last table is enough.
  • For a town festival stage, the screen usually fills the back of the stage.
  • For a full square, you need more surface so it can be seen from the back.

Modular screens like ours are built in whatever size you need: the screen adapts to the space, not the other way round.

Indoor or outdoor?

An outdoor screen is designed to withstand the weather and stays visible in the open air. Always ask whether the screen you're offered is an outdoor one when the event is in a square or a garden.

What content will you show?

Logos, presentations, videos, photos or visuals to go with the music. Prepare the content in landscape format and in good resolution, and send it in time so it can be tested before the event.

Who sets it up and who runs it?

An LED screen needs setting up, configuring and someone to control what's shown during the event. Ask whether the hire includes a technician or whether you have to provide one.

Power and space

Check that the venue has a power point nearby and room to build the structure. With these details, the quote will be fixed and free of surprises.
